ATTEMPTED BANNING TO AWARD-WINNING TV SERIES -2023 (TARO's remarkable achievement)

One of TARO’s remarkable achievements in 2023 was successfully representing Mr. ABDUL JUMA from ZAHANATI YA KIJIJI, a film producer and his associates, to defend their TV series before the Tanzania Film Board. The series, which aired on Azam television, faced complaints from the Tanzania National Nurses Association (TANNA), who claimed that the series portrayed nurses in a negative and unethical way. TANNA filed their claims to the board and demanded the banning of the series and an apology from the producers and the actors.

TARO intervened in the case and argued that the series was a work of fiction and artistic expression and that it did not intend to harm or defame any profession or individual. TARO also pointed out that the series had received positive feedback from the viewers and critics, and that it had a social message of raising awareness about the challenges and opportunities in the health sector.

The Tanzania Film Board, after hearing both sides, ruled in favor of ZAHANATI YA KIJIJI and dismissed the complaints from TANNA. The board stated that the series did not violate any laws or regulations. The board also praised the series for its quality and creativity and encouraged the producers to continue making more films that reflect the Tanzanian society and culture.

The victory of ZAHANATI YA KIJIJI was not only a win for the film company, but also for TARO and the entire artistic community in Tanzania. It demonstrated the strong commitment of TARO to protect and promote the rights and interests of artists. It also showed that the Tanzania Film Board is a positive institution that can uphold the principles of artistic freedom and cultural diversity.

The success of ZAHANATI YA KIJIJI was further recognized when the series won the award for the best TV series of the year (2023) at the Tanzania Film Festival. The series received acclaim from the jury and the audience, who appreciated its originality, relevance, and entertainment value. The award was a testament to the talent and vision of the filmmakers, as well as the support and advocacy of TARO.

TARO’s achievement in 2023 is a remarkable example of how an organization can make a difference in the arts and cultural sector in Tanzania. TARO has proven that it is a reliable and influential partner for artists, who can be counted on its expertise and assistance in defending artists' rights and interests. TARO has also shown that it is a leader and a catalyst for change, who can inspire and empower artists to create and express themselves freely and confidently. TARO is a champion of artistic freedom in Tanzania and a model for other organizations in the region and beyond.
